8000 Meter Challenge

What did I get myself into? A casual conversation with John Drollinger, my Marmot rep in SoCal, has now turned into me participating in the 8000 Meter Challenge in September.

The challenge, sponsored by Jansport  is an exclusive hiking / trail running event for outdoor industry retail staff and brand representatives. Participants will climb the three tallest peaks in Southern California in 24 hours, for a total elevation gain of 8,000 meters and trail distance close to 42 miles. The goal is to summit Mt. Baldy (Mt. San Antonio), Mt. San Gorgonio, and Mt. San Jacinto all in a SINGLE day.IMG_9202

What the hell did I
get myself into?

Quite honestly, there is way too much going on right now at work, life, and I could probably use a poolside vacation with a fruity rum drink in hand.

But is that what I really want? Not really. Climbing mountains, running on trails, and summiting peaks – is EXACTLY what I need. Like most of you, we are all outdoor enthusiast that thrive when we are challenged to hit a sales goal, improve margin, come in under budget, or in this case – summit three peaks in 24 hours. Below are the details on the challenge that will be taking place September 8th:

Mt. Baldy:

Distance: 8.4 Miles Round Trip
Elevation Gain: 3900′
Route: Ski Hut Trail via Manker Flats

Mt. San Gorgonio:

Distance: 18 Miles Round Trip
Elevation Gain: 5600′
Route: Vivian Creek Trail

Mt. San Jacinto:

Distance: 15 Miles Round Trip
Elevation Gain: 4384′
Route: Devil’s Slide (Humber Park)

A good friend of mine told me last week that I look different in pictures when I am in the mountains. She said my face lights up and my smile is contagious – I would agree!  I am thrilled to represent Marmot at this event, but also welcome the physical and mental challenge that it will bring. I have already started training for the event and can’t think of a better way to end the summer on a high note.

See you on the trailhead!
